Notes: 1) This is the fourth album by Canadian group Klaatu. 2) Above image and following credits were taken from the US vinyl release on Capitol ST-12080 (1980). 3) Album does not come with either musician or tech credits. Roles of band members at the time of the sessions and recording location were inferred from the interview database at www.klaatu.org. I want to thank that website's owner, David Bradley, for being so kind as to allowing me to make use of said material for the compilation of this post and for some help with last-minute adjustments. 4) In the above mentioned interviews, Klaatu member John Woloschuk and “Endangered Species” producer Christopher Bond (→ Hall & Oates) explain how album was recorded in Los Angeles, and that a number of L.A. session musicians were chosen to lay down basic tracks prior to group members adding vocals and overdubs. Lee was one of these musicians and the highlighted tracks indicating his contributions in the above track list are the result of both Mr. Woloschuk’s and Mr. Bond’s recollections of the recording session process, expressed in said interviews, along with those of the other two band members Terry Draper and Dee Long. The above is true also for the other session musicians mentioned in the following credits. 5) Please note that John Woloschuk’s recalling reaches two different conclusions about Lee’s presence on track 8, as on the Q&A article dated May, 2006, he mentions it as one of the two tracks he later overdubbed bass on. 6) Please note that in the above interviews no other bass player except Lee is mentioned has having taken part to the recording sessions of “Endangered Species”. The track attributions in this post are therefore the result of Mr. Woloschuk’s recollections, which were found not to be conflicting with Mr. Bond’s notion that Lee played bass on ‘at least a couple of the tracks’. 7) At the same link for the fans Q&As you will find a list of demoed songs that had been taped in preparation for the “Endangered Species” album sessions. Please note that the existence of subsequent versions of these songs recorded with the participation of Lee or of any of the other session players at the time is not a sure thing, and could only be confirmed by Mr. Bond’s master tape copies, as he explains in the above-mentioned interview. 8) Also according to what related on same sources as above, Klaatu’s drummer Terry Draper was not featured on the finished album as a drummer and only appears as a vocalist. 9) “Endangered Species” was re-released on CD by Bullseye Records of Canada. This edition will have liner notes by Klaatu members Terry Draper and John Woloschuk, and by producer Christopher Bond. November 9th/10th, 2011: The Latin Grammy Awards - Person Of The Year Tribute to Shakira

As some of you might know already, Colombian pop superstar Shakira is going to be the recipient of the Latin Person Of The Year Tribute at the next Latin Grammy® Awards 2011. Shakira, winner of two Grammy Awards and of seven Latin Grammys, will be honored with the tribute during a gala ceremony, and performing in a special concert event taking place in the context of the Latin Grammys, all on November 9th at the Mandalay Bay South Pacific Ballroom in Las Vegas, NV.

I just had a talk with our roving reporter at large, BeardBassman, and he spilled the beans: Leland Sklar is going to perform with Shakira on this very important occasion. While the gala/concert event will be a private thing, we are sure that BB is going to come up with some cool, exclusive behind-the-scenes images, and you will only have to stay tuned to these pages to be surprised. Lee will also appear with a number of other artists, and will be the bass player for Mexican singer-songwriter nominee Marco Antonio Solís on the Grammy Show night.

The prestigious Shakira event will precede the 12th Annual Latin Grammy Awards, which will be broadcast live on the Univision Network on Thursday, November 10, 2011. Listen To Me: Buddy Holly - The PBS Concert Special - Sneak Preview

We have already published a post about the September-released “Listen To Me: Buddy Holly” CD album, a star-studded tribute to one of the great heroes of rock’n’roll, issued by Verve and executively produced by Peter Asher. Now, as previously announced, comes the TV special, in the form of a concert which was taped with some of the stars originally included in the CD recording along with some other high-caliber guests. You can check out Lee and all the players from this event in the above-embedded sneak preview, read the in-depth CD album post by clicking → here and watch the original behind-the-scenes EPK of the album itself at this → link.

The performers in the TV special, which will be premiered on PBS Television next December, include Stevie Nicks, Lyle Lovett, Chris Isaak, Graham Nash and Patrick Stump, with superstar guests like Boz Scaggs, Raul Malo, Michelle Branch, Shawn Colvin, Paul Anka, Cobra Starship, Phil Everly, and famed guitar virtuosos James Burton and Albert Lee. With special appearances by Keith Richards, Ringo Starr, Jackson Browne, Brian Wilson, and Eric Idle. The DVD of the show is available exclusively through PBS. Every “Listen to Me” DVD will benefit PBS and, along with every “Listen to Me” CD, will benefit the next generation of music's greats. Check local listings.

Our roving reporter at large, BeardBassman (wonder who is hiding behind that nickname…) took this lovely picture of our Leland Sklar and Oscar- and Grammy-winning lyricist Hal David about one week ago. Picture was taken behind the scenes of “Love, Sweet Love”, the Mark Taper Forum event held on October 17th, 2001, celebrating Mr. David’s 90th birthday. Leland was one of the players in the concert, a star-studded tribute to one of the most legendary wordsmiths in the history of American popular music. Lee is one of the musicians participating in the Bass Player Live! event taking place today and tomorrow (October 22-23, 2011) in Los Angeles. A bass clinic with him, Steve Bailey and Jonas Hellborg (JoStLe) is scheduled to be held in Clinic Room “A” today, Saturday, October 22nd, from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm. Bass Player LIVE! 2011 is a star-studded two-day event of clinics, exhibits, and floor and booth demos. A Saturday night concert will include Lifetime Achievement Award presentations to Jack Casady and Larry Graham, with performances to follow, and a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award to James Jamerson, accepted by his son, James, Jr. The concert will conclude with an all-star jam led by Steve Bailey.

“Love, Sweet Love” - A Hal David Event

Lee is one of the musicians participating in the forthcoming Hal David tribute taking place on October 17 to benefit the ASCAP Foundation and the Blue Ribbon of the Music Center of Los Angeles. The event, named “Love, Sweet Love”, will pair a concert at the Mark Taper Forum with a gourmet dinner at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

David, one of the most beloved songwriters of all time, whose lyrical repertoire is full of gems such as “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head”, “To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before,” “We Have All the Time In the World,” “One Less Bell to Answer,” “Don’t Make Me Over,” “Close to You” and “Walk on By,” turned 90 in May.

The celebration concert will include a whole group of world-renowned musical talents, from David’s long-time collaborators, composer Burt Bacharach and singer Dionne Warwick, to Kristin Chenoweth, Herb Alpert, Dwight Yoakam, Freda Payne, Jackie DeShannon, Lani Hall, Michele Lee, Smokey Robinson, Valerie Simpson, B.J. Thomas, Steve Tyrell, Albert Hammond, the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA) Vocal Jazz Ensemble and others. Academy Award-winning composer Paul Williams will preside as emcee.

“Not Fade Away - Stevie Nicks // Stevie Nicks’ voice and style are national treasures! She is a valued friend and as one of the very first people we invited to be part of this project, Stevie had first pick. I initially suggested another song but Stevie chose “Not fade Away”, and how right she was. I co-produced this track with my dear friend and colleague (and one of the very finest guitarists in the whole of rock and roll), Waddy Wachtel and we brought in the legendary rhythm section of Russ Kunkel and Leland Sklar. Waddy and Stevie had worked together as a team for quite a while so it was the perfect setup. And I was very privileged to join Lori Nicks and Sharon Celani as one of the “Bopettes” in singing our version of the original background parts! Stevie’s vocal was cut live - she sang with an intensity and determination that is a treat to hear. (…) // Well All Right - Lyle Lovett // One of the most amiable, charming and intelligent gentlemen in the music business with a wonderful voice to match, Lyle is another favourite singer who said “yes” right away. I was visiting him at his recording session in Los Angeles and asked him on the spot. We picked up a couple of guitars and tried out “Well All Right”, which seemed to suit Lyle perfectly. I sang some harmony parts, we both played and it sounded right - so we called up our shared favourite rhythm section of Russ Kunkel and Leland Sklar (along with guitar maestro, Waddy Wachtel) and cut it just that way.”.
